چکیده

Observations from diverse literature sources reveal that diatomists have more-or-less consistently viewed T. pseudonana as a small (less than 10 μm diameter) centric diatom with 0– 3 central area strutted processes, a relatively high number of marginal area strutted processes, and a labiate process situated roughly equidistantly between two marginal area strutted processes [1-7]. Ultrastructural features common to diatoms illustrated by these authors include three satellite pores per marginal area strutted process, the presence of more-or-less prominent cowlings around the strutted process satellite pores, and a more-or-less prominent siliceous ridge (opercle) on the central strutted process tube situated directly above each satellite pore. The labiate process is typically oval in shape.

Transcript level coordination of carbon pathways during silicon starvation‐induced lipid accumulation in the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana

Diatoms are one of the most productive and successful photosynthetic taxa on Earth and possess attributes such as rapid growth rates and production of lipids, making them candidate sources of renewable fuels. Despite their significance, few details of the mechanisms used to regulate growth and carbon metabolism are currently known, hindering metabolic engineering approaches to enhance productiv...

RESEARCH ARTICLES AVery High Fraction of Unique Intron Positions in the Intron-Rich Diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana Indicates Widespread Intron Gain

Although spliceosomal introns are present in all characterized eukaryotes, intron numbers vary dramatically, from only a handful in the entire genomes of some species to nearly 10 introns per gene on average in vertebrates. For all previously studied intron-rich species, significant fractions of intron positions are shared with other widely diverged eukaryotes, indicating that 1) large numbers ...

Interaction of toxic trace metals and mechanisms of detoxification in the planktonic diatoms Ditylum brightwellii and Thalassiosira pseudonana.

Effects of cadmium (10 nM), copper (80 nM) and zinc (150 nM) additions were studied in the marine diatom Ditylum brightwellii and the riverine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana. Defense against oxidative stress via cellular thiol (SH) pools and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activation, detoxification via phytochelatins and cell damage were monitored in metal-exposed exponential-phase cells and contr...
